Coastal Family Home Concept
BDAA Design Awards Finalist
A single-storey, three-bedroom coastal home designed around accessibility, sustainability and relaxed living. The clients wanted to incorporate shipping containers and straw bale construction, wheelchair access throughout, generous 3.2m ceilings and a strong connection to the outdoors.
The design brings these unconventional construction methods together with passive design principles, including earth tubes and fixed louvres. Open-plan living connects directly to the outdoor area, while the orientation and layout capture beach views, natural light and ventilation while maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties.
Solar, hydronic underfloor heating and heat-pump technology further support the home's energy efficiency, with provision for a future pool and possible extensions allowing the home to evolve over time.
Modern, linear design with fixed louvres that protect from the western sun while still framing beautiful beach views — creating a comfortable, stylish, and relaxed coastal living experience.
Wheelchair-accessible, with extra-high ceilings and creative use of shipping containers, seamlessly connecting indoor spaces to the courtyard. Large openings maintain beach views, creating a flexible, comfortable, and light-filled home.
Open-plan kitchen overlooking the lounge, featuring the exposed shipping container as a statement wall. Large openings connect seamlessly to the courtyard and preserve beach views, creating a bright, social, and flexible living space.
Light-filled dining space that opens seamlessly to the courtyard, creating a relaxed, indoor-outdoor lifestyle perfect for entertaining and daily living.
Shaded for summer, with paved dining, grassy play area, and sliding doors on three sides — seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor living.
Sunlight floods the home through louvres and eaves, naturally warming the interiors for bright, comfortable winter days.
Louvres and eaves block harsh summer sun, keeping the home cool and comfortable while still allowing breezes and light for relaxed, airy living.
